Editing Documents in OneDrive

Last modified 1/14/2025

Documents can be edited directly in your OneDrive library. There are two options when editing documents via OneDrive: Edit the document in an online version of the application (Office Online), or in the desktop application (as long as you have the desktop application installed).

Editing Documents Online

To edit a document online, use the following steps:

  1. Go to office365.illinoisstate.edu.
  2. Login to Microsoft (Office) 365 with your Illinois State University email address (e.g. YourULID@ilstu.edu) and password.
  3. Click OneDrive.
  4. Click My files on the left side of the screen.
  5. Click the name of the file you want to edit. The document will open in your web browser or it will open in a new web browser tab (depending on your browser settings/preferences).

The document will open using Office Online. You can now edit the document. Any changes you make to the document will be automatically saved.

To rename a document online, use the following steps:

  1. Follow steps #1-3 from above.
  2. Hover over the document you want to rename. Click the three dots that appear.

  3. A dropdown menu will appear. Click Rename.

  4. The Rename window will appear. Type in the new name of the document in the text box within this window.
  5. Click the Update button.

The document is now renamed with the new name.

Editing Documents in the Desktop Application

  7. In the dropdown menu that appears, click Open in Desktop.

  8. The Open Word? window will appear at the top of the screen. Click the Open Word button.
