Accessibility

We strive to provide a welcoming and accessible place for all Illinois State students, faculty, staff, and guests. Accessibility means everyone can use a product or service, regardless of how they encounter it.

What is Accessibility?

Accessibility refers to the inclusive design and development of digital content and tools that can be accessed and used by people with disabilities. It aims to eliminate barriers and provide equal access to information and functionalities for individuals with various abilities, including those with visual, auditory, physical, or cognitive differences.

The Importance of Accessibility

  1. Inclusion and Equal Opportunity: By making your website accessible, you provide equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities to participate fully in the digital world.

  2. Legal Compliance: Accessibility is not just a matter of goodwill; it is also required by law in many countries. Legislation, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in the United States, Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Illinois Information Technology Accessibility Act mandates accessibility for websites and digital services.

  3. Improved User Experience: Implementing accessibility best practices enhances the user experience for all visitors, not just those with disabilities. For example, providing clear and concise content benefits individuals with cognitive impairments, as well as users who are not fluent in the website's language. Accessibility improvements often result in streamlined navigation, faster load times, and better overall usability.

  4. Expanded Reach and Audience: By making your website accessible, you open doors to a larger audience. Approximately 16% of the global population has some form of disability (World Health Organization), and many individuals rely on assistive technologies to navigate the web and mobile devices. Embracing accessibility enables you to connect with a broader range of people, potentially leading to increased traffic, and engagement.
