Unable to Launch Malwarebytes

Last modified 10/22/2024

Some malware and spyware can prevent Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from running. If Malwarebytes Anti-Malware does not open, rename the application’s executable file name to something else.

Before you begin make sure you have Malwarebytes properly installed. To install Malwarebytes, please see the article below.

To rename the executable file for Malwarebytes Anti-Malware so it will open and run, do the following:

  1. Navigate to and click on your File Explorer in the lower left-hand corner of Windows Task Bar.

  2. Once in File Explorer, find and click on your C: drive.
    1. In 32-bit Windows, double-click the Program Files folder.
    2.  In 64-bit Windows, double-click the Program Files (x86) folder.
  3. Find the folder labeled Malwarebytes and double-click it.
  4. Locate the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware executable file (.exe file).
    1. The file should appear as either mbam.exe or mbam (depending on whether or not you can see file extensions).

  5. Right-click on the File and choose Show more options > Rename.
    1.  If you are able to see file extensions (.exe), rename mbam.exe to temp.exe
    2.  If you are unable to see file extensions, rename mbam to temp.
  6. After renaming the executable file, restart your computer.
  7. Once your computer restarts, you should be able to successfully launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
