IT staff at Illinois State University can use LabStats to generate reports about the computer labs they manage.

Before You Begin

LabStats is a web application used by IT staff at Illinois State University to track various statistics about the computer labs they manage. This article describes how to log in to the LabStats website and generate reports based on computer usage in campus computer labs.

All computer labs on campus generate statistics in LabStats. If you are an IT staff member who manages a computer lab and would like access to LabStats, please navigate to The Illinois State University Help website, click Submit Detailed Request, login, and fill out the form requesting access.

Run a LabStats Report

As an IT staff member responsible for managing one or more computer labs on campus, there are two common reports in LabStats that might interest you.

Application Launches Report

This report lists each of the applications that have been launched by visitors to the lab. This report can help you identify applications that are being underutilized or which are not being used at all. It can also help you identify very popular applications.

To run a LabStats application report, do the following:

  1. Navigate to labstats.ilstu.edu, select Sign in with Microsoft, and then log in via Central Login.
    1. For more information about Central Login at ISU, please refer to: Central Login
  2. Navigate to ReportsAppUse →  Saved Reports Application Usage Summary - specific lab(s).
  3. Put a check mark next to one or more computers or groups from the list on the left side of the page.
    • These are the computers against which your report will be generated.
    • Click the plus symbol + next to each group to expand it so you can select a subset of computers within the group if desired.
  4. Locate the area labeled Standard, and select the desired date range for your report.
    • This is the date range for which your report will be generated.
  5. Click Generate at the bottom of the page.
    • The page will fade out and an activity indicator will appear toward the top.
    • It may take several minutes to generate the report.
    • The longer the date range and the more computers you selected, the more time it will take to generate the report.
  6. Once the report has generated, you can organize it by Application, Launches, Total Usage Time, Average Usage, and Last Launched time stamp. Enter a value in the appropriate box and select a filter and the report will re-run with the filter applied.

Your report results are displayed at the bottom of the page. You can export your report to CSV, Excel, Word, or PDF. Note that if you are using Preview on MacOS  to view a PDF exported from LabStats, it might appear to be empty. For best results, use Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Login Summary Report

This report provides a summary of the total number of unique users and non-unique logins for a particular lab or set of computers. This report can help you determine the amount of traffic seen by your computer lab within a given time frame.

To run a LabStats Login Summary report, do the following:

  1. Within LabStats, navigate to Reports LabStats →  Saved Reports →  Login Summary - specific lab(s).
  2. Put a check mark next to one or more computers or groups from the list on the left.
  3. Select the desired date range for your report.
  4. Click the Generate button.
  5. You can use the filters to further refine your report if you wish.

Note that on this report, the user count refers to unique users who have logged in during the specified date range, and logins refers to non-unique user logins.

Your report results are displayed at the bottom of the page. You can export your report to CSV, Excel, Word, or PDF. Note that if your are using Preview on Mac OS X to view a PDF exported from LabStats, it might appear to be empty. For best results, use Adobe Acrobat Reader.
