How to import a Commons resource into a Canvas course
Last modified 10/22/2024
Canvas Commons is a digital repository that instructors can use to find, import, and share learning resources. It is linked from all ISU Canvas courses and includes learning objects such as assignments, discussions, quizzes, modules, and files shared by Canvas users across the world. The learning resources placed in Commons may be shared with all Canvas users, or with the ISU community only.
Finding and importing the Commons resource
- Open Commons from the navigation menu on the left hand side of the Canvas screen. It can be found just above the Help icon signified by a question mark.
- From the Commons screen, search for the resource you wish to import - you may sort your search by Latest, Most Relevant, Most Favorited, and Most Downloaded. Searches may also be filtered by type of resource (assignment, module, quiz, etc.).
- Once you have located the resource you wish to import, click on it to view the details on the resource.
- Click Import/Download button on the right side of the screen
- A list of courses for which you are the instructor will appear in the detailed import menu. Select the course(s) into which you wish to import the Commons resource.
- Select Import into Course.
Viewing the imported Commons resource
- Depending upon the size of the resource, it may require some time to process and may not be viewable immediately.
- When the resource is viewable, you may find it by navigating to the appropriate resource area within the course to which the Commons resource was imported (i.e. an imported module will be found in the modules section of the course, an imported assignment in the assignments section, etc.).
