Ownerless Microsoft 365 Groups


The new policy for ownerless Microsoft 365 groups will be implemented early 2025. The policy consists of the following:

An email notification will be sent to the top 5 most active members in the group (that are part of a specific license group), and ask if they want to be the owner of the group. Only 2 members are able to take ownership of the group. The notification will be sent once a week for 7 weeks. If no one has taken ownership of the group or responded after 7 weeks the group will be reviewed and a decision will be made on what to do with the group.

Subject: Need your help with (Group name) group

Message: 

Hi User,

You're receiving this email because you've been an active member of the (Group name) group. This group currently does not have an owner. 

Per your organization's policy, the group requires an owner. 

If you have any questions, please contact the Technology Support Center.
