Tips for Using Assistive Technology with Otter.ai

Last modified 2/5/2025

Otter.ai is a meeting transcription service that lets users record conversations or upload audio files, receiving both a text transcription and the original audio recording. In addition, Otter offers features such as summarizing key points of a meeting, distinguishing between speakers’ voices, recording Zoom meetings, and an AI chatbot that can answer questions about a recorded meeting.

Using Otter with assistive technology

This section explains how to use Otter with various assistive technologies, including screen readers, magnification software, text-to-speech readers, and more.

Otter with a screen reader (iOS)

  1. On the main page of the Otter app, you should see all of your transcribed recordings. To open one, click the unlabeled button next to the file name, not the file name its self. Clicking the file name does not open the transcribed recording. *This issue only applies to the "home" page of the otter app. The "my conversations" page is unaffected.
  2. Otter includes an AI chatbot that helps summarize meetings and answer questions. Sometimes, VoiceOver may not read the chatbot’s response when you shift focus to it. To read the response, exit the AI chat screen and then re-enter it. Although this issue doesn’t occur every time, it’s fairly common. For a smoother experience with the chatbot while using a screen reader, it’s recommended to access the chatbot via the Otter desktop website. (You can still record transcripts from your phone and then view them on the Otter website with your account.)
  3. For easier reading of a recording's transcription, you can export it as a text file. To do this:
  • Select the transcribed recording you would like exported text for.
  • After clicking a transcribed recording, make sure the "transcription" button is selected. The transcription button is the second button in a series of three unlabeled buttons near the top of the screen.
  • Click the "more options" button.
  • Click the "export" button.
  • On this screen, you will see the transcription text, as well as options to include speakers names, export as a monolog, change file format, and more.
  • Once these options are set to your desired preferences, press the "continue" button.
• You will then be brought to the iOS share sheet, where you have the common sharing options, as well as the ability to save the text document to the files app.

4. Listening to recorded audio: To listen to the audio of a transcribed recording in Otter, follow these Steps:

  • Open a transcribed recording
  • Select the transcription button. It is the second button in a series of three unlabeled buttons near the top of the screen.
  • Use explore by touch(dragging your finger around the screen). Move towards the bottom of the screen where you should find buttons to play, fast forward, and rewind the recording.
