Tips for Using Assistive Technology with ChatGPT

Last modified 10/21/2024

Chat GPT is an artificial intelligence chatbot that has human like conversations with users. User can ask questions, get ideas, look up information, and converse with the AI.

Using Chat GPT with assistive technology

In this article, using Chat GPT with assistant technology will be covered. Examples of assistive technologies include screen readers, magnification software, and text to speech readers.

Chat GPT with screen readers on Windows and Mac

  1. When using a screen reader to navigate the Chat GPT interface, simple tasks like logging in and sending/ receiving chats are accessible. However, there are various unlabeled buttons on the chat GPT website that aren’t labeled, causing potential confusion for a screen reader user.
  2. To have accessible access to more of chat GPT’s features such as file uploads, exploring GPTS, and accessing settings, it is recommended that when using a mac device, the Chat GPT for Mac app is used instead of the website. If not on a mac, the Chat GPT iOS app also provides accessible ways to access Chat GPT features.
  3. When messaging with Chat GPT, the screen reader doesn’t announce events like message sent, when Chat GPT is responding/done responding, etc. You have to repeatedly check the written response by moving the screen readers focus on to it as the response is generated in real time.
  4. When using the Chat GPT app on mac, there is an area that says “no action available.” Interacting with this area shows you the messages between you and chat gpt.

Using the Chat GPT appon mac to work with inaccessible files or image descriptions.

With Chat GPT, you can upload screenshots, images, and files for analysis. The mac allows for this to be done with a screen reader. You could upload files for analysis, upload an image and request a description, or take a screenshot of the current content on your screen and get information about it. TO do this, open the Chat GPT app, or with the app open in the background, use the keyboard shortcut option plus space to bring up the messaging window. Select the attach button and then select from the various options like taking screenshots,  uploading files and photos, or taking a photo. Once done ask a question such as “describe this picture” or “summarize this file.” You can even ask questions like “Is my face in the center of the frame?” “Is my appearance okay for a meeting?” “Describe this graph.” You can then ask follow up questions about the file or photo. Note that on the free plan, there are limits to how many photos or files can be analyzed in a time frame. For higher limits, you have to upgrade to a paid chat gpt subscription.

Chat Gpt with a screen reader on iOS

  1. On the homepage of the ChatGPT app, the swipe order is different than where everything is laid out if you use explore by touch. If using explore by touch, the chat content is shown, with the message compose options like the message text field and send at the bottom. However, when swiping around the app, the message compose options are on top followed by the chat.
  2. Depending on your settings, you may feel haptics while chat GPT is responding. These haptics help to know when the chatbot is responding, and when the response is complete. To make sure these haptics are enabled:
  • Open the Chat GPT app.
  • Click menu.
  • Tap your name, settings.
  • Un the app section, enable the haptic feedback toggle.
