How to Sign in Using Multi-Factor Authentication

Your experience when signing in will differ slightly with Multi-Factor Authentication enabled based on the method you chose to authenticate. Use the steps below to assist you in this process.

How to Sign In to Microsoft Office Using MFA - Phone Call Verification

Use the following steps if you have registered for MFA using a phone call as your preferred method of authentication.

1. Navigate to Office365.IllinoisState.edu and sign in with your credentials.

2. You will get a notification that ‘your phone is being called and to answer in order to continue’ (See Figure 1).

4. You will receive a phone call asking you to press the Pound Key # to verify your Sign-in. Once you have pressed the # key and have ended your call, you will be signed in successfully.

How to Sign in to Microsoft Office Using MFA - Authenticator App Verification

Use the following steps if you have registered for MFA using the Authenticator application as your preferred method of authentication. Do note that there are two authentication methods with the Authenticator app - a drop down notification sent directly to your phone and a verification code that is shown in the Authentication App. Below are the instructions for each type of authentication.

 

Note: You first will need to download the Authenticator app to your phone and set up your profile in the application. Once you have done this, your Authenticator application should work as normal.

 

Signing into Microsoft Office with the Drop Down Notification Authentication Method

 

1. Navigate to Office365.IllinoisState.edu

2. Sign in with your credentials.

3. You will receive a drop down notification on your mobile device asking to “Approve” or “Deny” the Sign-In request (See Figure 2)

4. Tap Approve to approve the sign in.

5. Your sign in should be authenticated.

1. Navigate to Office365.IllinoisState.edu

2. Sign in with your credentials.

3. You will see a notification asking you to type in the code displayed on your Authenticator app from your device. Open the app, select your profile, and enter the code that is shown. (See Figure 3)

4. Enter the code that is shown in the application.

5. Your sign in should be authenticated

Note: You may notice that the code has an expiration timer on it. This is a normal functionality for your security.

If you approved the Sign-in using one of the above methods, no further steps are necessary and you will now be able to access Office 365. If you are unable to proceed using one of the above methods, click the option to Sign in another way as seen in Figure 1. During the ‘Approval for signing in’ you will notice an option to “Don’t ask again for 60 days” (See Figure 4), you may choose this option if you are using a device at home that you will access office products with on a regular basis, to prevent having to approve sign-ins every time.
