Phishing and SPAM Email

SPAM Email

Illinois State reduces spam by blocking known spammers and by running anti-spam protection, which traps known spam emails before they are delivered. Suspected spam is flagged and delivered to your Junk folder.

Phishing Scams and Identity Theft

Phishing scams try to trick you into giving away your personal information. Be skeptical about emails you receive and contact the Technology Support Center if you are at all suspicious. Illinois State will never ask you to send your password through email.

Overview of Phishing

Virus and Spyware Protection

Virus and Spyware Protection is recommended for all computers accessing the university networks to ensure everyone’s security. Illinois State University approves the following antivirus applications:

Windows 10: Windows Defender is the pre-installed antivirus solution from Microsoft and may be accessed through the Windows start menu.

Mac OS X: Avira is a free antivirus software that may be installed here.

Security Updates

The University also requires you to install all available security updates for your computer’s operating system, as well as updates for installed software like Flash and Java. For more information on how to run updates review the following articles:

Any computer that fails to comply with the Conditions of Access may be taken offline until it can be updated so it meets the requirements.

Copyright and File Sharing

The University expects all students to abide by federal and state laws including copyright laws. Downloading and uploading copyrighted material without permission is prohibited by the University as well as by federal law and can result in University sanctions in addition to external legal actions. This includes music, videos, games, software, etc.

Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Access

BitTorrent and other peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing networks are initially blocked on ResNet and other campus wireless networks. Students who legitimately need P2P access may submit a request at ITHelp.IllinoisState.edu/request so they can download or share files such as Linux distributions, game updates, etc.
