Recovering Deleted Email in Office 365

When you delete email in Office 365, the deleted message is moved to your “Deleted Items” folder. You can move messages from your Deleted Items folder back into your Inbox or another folder. In some cases, it is even possible to recover deleted items that have been removed from your Deleted Items folder. Both methods are described below.

Deleted Items Folder

To move email from your Deleted Items folder in Office 365, do the following:

  1. Go to, log in, and launch the Outlook app.
  2. Click Deleted Items on the left side of the window beneath Folders.
    • If you don’t see the Deleted Items folder, click More.
  3. Select the message you would like to recover.
  4. With the message selected, click Move to at the top of the window and select one of the options from the menu.
    • For example, to move the selected message back to your Inbox, click Move to > Inbox.

Recover Deleted Items

If you don’t see the message you want to recover in your Deleted Items folder, you might still be able to recover it from the server by doing the following:

  1. Right-click on the Deleted Items folder and select Recover deleted items… from the pop-up menu.
  2. The Recover deleted items window will open.
    • Note that your browser may prevent this pop-up window from appearing. If this happens, you can allow the pop-up window to appear by following the on-screen instructions provided by your browser.
  3. Select the message you want to recover. You can select multiple messages if desired.
  4. Click Recover at the bottom of the window.
  5. You will receive a message that states “the recovered email will be moved back to your Inbox.” Click OK.
  6. The message will disappear from the Recover deleted items window.
  7. Close the Recover deleted items window.
  8. Click Inbox on the left side of the window. The message you recovered is now within your Inbox.
