Overview of Internet Access at Illinois State University

Illinois State University offers both wired and wireless internet access on campus. All students, faculty, and staff may log into the University’s networks with their ULID and password. Guests of the University may also create a guest wireless account for use during a short visit.

In order to connect to the University networks, users must agree to the ISU Terms of Use, and devices must meet the University’s Conditions of Access, including keeping current with operating system updates and anti-virus software. For more information regarding ISU Terms of Use and Conditions of Access, please refer to the following articles:

Wireless Internet Access at ISU

ISU has several different wireless networks available on campus. Which network you will connect to will depend upon your affiliation with the University, as well as your location on campus. For more information about wireless coverage please refer to the following article:

The “isunet” Wireless Network

The “isunet” wireless network is the largest of the University wireless networks. The “isunet” network may be accessed by students, faculty, and staff from most any building on campus by logging into the network with their ULID and password. This network may be used to connect your laptop or desktop computer, as well as mobile devices such as a smart phone or tablet, to the internet on campus. Below are links to instructions regarding how to connect your device to the “isunet” wireless network:

For Windows Computers refer to the following articles:

For Mac OS X Computers refer to the following articles:

For Mobile Devices refer to the following articles:

For Google Chromebooks refer to the following article:

The “isunet-StartHere” Wireless Network

The “isunet-StartHere” wireless network is a wireless network that guests of the University may use to create a Guest wireless account for temporary internet access on campus. Students who want to connect IoT streaming and entertainment devices (such as an Amazon Fire, Apple TV, or Roku device) to a wireless network on campus will be able to connect those devices to this network after registering their devices in the Device Registration portal for use with this network.

Please Note: Currently, while students at Illinois State University may register their streaming and entertainment devices in the wireless device registration portal, faculty and staff do not have this ability. Faculty and staff who wish to request the ability to do so may call the Technology Support Center at 309-438-4357, or send an email to SupportCenter@IllinoisState.edu with their name, location including building name and room number, and what type of device they would like to connect to the “isunet-StartHere” wireless network.

For information about Guest Wireless Accounts refer to the following article:

The “isu-public” Wireless Network

The “isu-public” wireless network is a publicly accessible wireless network available only in Milner Library. This network may be accessed by anyone within range, with the following restrictions:

  • The “isu-public” wireless network is only available in Milner Library.
  • The “isu-public” wireless network is open and unencrypted.
  • You cannot connect to the campus VPN, but third-party VPN connections are allowed.
  • You cannot access internal university resources, but you can access public resources. An internal resource is an Illinois State website or service that normally requires a VPN connection from off campus.
  • Peer-to-peer (P2P) network traffic is blocked on all campus wireless networks.

The “eduroam” Wireless Network

“Eduroam” is a global Wi-Fi service that enables a fast and secure wireless internet connection to visiting university researchers, students, staff, and faculty anywhere an “eduroam” connection is available. More information about “eduroam” can be found in the following article:

Wired “ResNet” Internet Access in University Residence Halls

ISU students may use the wired “ResNet” internet available in campus Residence Halls. You may connect your desktop or laptop computer to the wired network, and you will also connect devices such as game consoles and smart TV’s to the wired network. While you may connect game consoles and smart TV’s to the “isunet-StartHere” network (described in the section above), you may not experience full functionality; so it is recommended you utilize the wired “ResNet” connection for these devices. You may access the network by registering your device in the Device Registration Portal and then connecting your device to an ethernet port located in your room.
