How to Export and Import Contacts in Thunderbird

This article explains how to export and import your contacts using Thunderbird.


Exporting Contacts

  1. Within Thunderbird, click [Address Book].
  2. Click [Tools] > [Export].
  3. Name and choose the location where you would like to save the file.


Your contacts have been exported and saved to the specified location.


Importing Contacts

  1. Within Thunderbird, click [Address Book].
  2. Click [Tools] > [Import].

2a. By default, Thunderbird will attempt to import mail, address book entries, feed subscriptions, settings and filters.  Click [Address Books] under “Select the type of material to import.”

  1. Click [Next].
  2. Select the type of file to import, by default, the address book you exported above will be saved as a Text file.
  3. Click [Next].
  4. Locate the file and click to highlight.
  5. Click [Open].
  6. The Import Address Book menu will open displaying the items from the file, which will be imported.  
  7. Choose the options and click [OK].
  8. Click [Finish].


Your contacts will now appear in your Thunderbird address book.
